"A Slice of my Life"- A Personal Introduction to Non-Spoken Communication

Australian Speech Therapist and New Zealand Cartoonist

Team up for People Without Speech

Jane Remington-Gurney is a speech therapist based in Brisbane Australia who has  teamed up with Stan Eales, a cartoonist based in the UK.  Stan, who hails from Auckland,  has produced some wonderful cartoons to illustrate Jane’s book “A Slice of My Life – A Personal Introduction to Non-Spoken Communication”.

Not being able to speak might be considered devastating, but not being able to communicate might be considered one of the worst forms of human torture. Jane has spent over thirty years helping people who have been slow to acquire speech or have lost speech because of illness or accident. Many of these people have learned to communicate using gestures, pointing, signing … and some have even re-gained the power of speech.

When asked about why she wrote this book, the first in a series dedicated to complex communication needs, Jane said, “Speech is a gift we should never take for granted. We need to communicate to express our ideas, our thoughts and most importantly, to ask questions. There are lots of different ways we can express ourselves but we need communication partners who have the knowledge and the skills to help. Some forms of communication have been shown to not only improve expressive language but also the understanding of words and ideas. I hope that my book and the books that follow, will inspire readers to better appreciate the power of communication.”

. “A Slice of My Life - A personal Introduction to Non-spoken Communication" retails at $45
