What is a Speech Language Pathologist?

A Speech Language Pathologist is also known as a Speech Therapist. This person has at least an under graduate degree in Speech Pathology and is registered to practice in Queensland by the Registration Board of Health Practitioners.

The four year undergraduate training encompasses many aspects of communication and communication impairment. For example, voice, fluency, articulation, language and literacy.  Some Speech Pathologists graduate and specialize in specific areas of communication impairment.

At Options we have specialized in communication impairments that have arisen because of injury (acquired brain damage and stroke) or have failed to develop properly (autism, developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, speech – language impairments). This form of specialization has meant that we have taken further training and continually update our skills so that we can respond to the needs of people with Complex Communication Needs (CCN).

Our roles include administering screening assessments, formal assessments, designing and implementing intervention programs, liaising with other team members and providing interventions  which combine our skills with those of other team members. For example, we have provided programs to reflect a multidisciplinary approach to families who have engaged Applied Behavioural Analysis, RDI, Floortime and Sensory Integrative approaches to their children’s developmental program.

At the Petrie clinic we run joint music and speech therapy programs one day each week. For many of our families it is not uncommon for us to be in regular contact and working side by side with other team members including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and educationalists.

The Speech Therapists at Options offer strategies which are both evidence based and emerging in their acceptance in the field of communication remediation.

At all times we endeavour through knowledge, skill and experience to improve the capacity of our clients and enhance their ability to interact in their communities.
